However, an efficient bus network is not the result of simply adding lines where there is demand: it is the product of rigorous design that balances territorial coverage, travel times, service frequency, and operational cost.
Many networks carry historical routes that no longer correspond to the actual distribution of the population or current mobility patterns. The result is a service that is not competitive with private vehicles, with low commercial speeds, poorly managed transfers, and areas with insufficient coverage… all at an operational cost that does not translate into the quality of service that citizens need.
Collective public transport studies allow for the redesign of the network from a functional perspective: where it should reach, how lines should coordinate with each other and with other modes, and how the service should be structured to be a real alternative to the car, within the framework of sustainable mobility plans at a municipal or supramunicipal level.

How we work on collective public transport studies
At VAIC Mobility, a mobility consultancy, we carry out transport demand studies and design collective public transport services that combine demand analysis, network modeling, and operational design, with the aim of defining a viable, efficient, and user-oriented network.
The work always starts with a deep understanding of the territory: population distribution, main trip generators and attractors, existing connections, and coverage gaps. At the same time, we identify the factors that limit commercial speed and propose corrective measures: bus lanes, traffic signal priority, and route adjustments.
Subsequently, we dimension the supply, defining the design criteria, the route, stops, and network structure to maximize coverage and minimize travel times. We coordinate the service with the rest of the network and evaluate economic viability by comparing alternative scenarios.
When demand does not justify a conventional regular bus service, on-demand transport (TAD) studies allow us to evaluate flexible service models that cover these territories efficiently and economically sustainably.

A service that is not competitive is not a real alternative
A bus network can have excellent coverage on the map and be equally invisible to most of the population. If travel times do not compete with cars, if transfers are inconvenient, or if the service disappears after 8 PM, citizens do not use it. The competitiveness of public transport is not a marketing issue: it is a design issue.
